My first day at NPR was a success. How do I know this? Because 1) I’m still working there as far as I know and 2) I’m still alive.
It appears that I’ll have to learn another language, including what “children” are (and no, not real children), what “two-ways” are, and how to “back [...]

airline foible

The airline lost my luggage in transit, until this morning I got the call from a driver who had my backpack stuffed with my swimsuits, flip flops, yoga pants and makeup bag — oh and several grains of sand – in his trunk.
The thing is, I’m giddy I have my stuff back. I’ll ride the [...]
beachin’ it solo

So one crappy thing about going to the beach solo is trying to put sunscreen on the small of your back. I have discovered that my right arm extends farther than my left, purely by judging by where I was burned (I can tell by the white fingerprints reaching into my burn).
Also, Domino’s doesn’t serve [...]
bahamas: day 3

I found my little slice of paradise today. It’s over at the Westin and there are lounge chairs in the shallow water of infinity pool that looks out over the ocean. The ocean water, clear and clean, was a mixture of deep navy blue and sky sea blue. Seagulls kept landing in the pool and [...]
bahamas: day 2

I had the thought today that my resort isn’t all that nice. And many of the people I’m seeing are older unfriendly overweight couples who are smoking cigarettes and look like they belong in a casino. My continental breakfast of oatmeal, an English muffin and watered down coffee was also less than satisfying, although I [...]
doesn’t she already have enough money?

Oprah’s “O” magazine in a kitschy drugstore on Grand Bahama Island costs $8.75. (I’m more appalled by that than by my $1.15 small pack of M&Ms). Maybe the Bahamanians get the money from the mark-up, but that is one pricey magazine.
bahamas: day 1

When I climbed down out of the puddle hopper — a tiny American Eagle airplane — in Freeport on Grand Bahama Island this afternoon, I could smell the salt from the ocean although it was slightly chilly and overcast. I was clearly on the only plane that had arrived from Miami in a while. [...]
blogs

I once thought that finding and tracking blogs was a complete enigma. I even set up my own blog up via blogspot.com two years ago, wrote on it once, and forgot about it. I didn’t understand the point of blogs then. I would hear people talk about ‘bloggers’ who set up at my local coffee [...]
orchids

My orchids are blooming, my orchids are blooming! All of the flowers had fallen off in August last year, and within the last week three new beautiful magenta flowers have opened. Another bud is about to open. It makes me so happy every time I walk into my bedroom. (I’ve also become that crazy lady [...]
my moments

It’s a tradition at the WBJ that when someone leaves, they have to tell the editorial staff their “moment” — a memory that encapsulates their time at the paper. I had to give my moment today at my last staff meeting, which of course turned into several moments.
Here were just a few of my many [...]
